The EU regulation to prevent deforestation

The EU Deforestation Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, EUDR) aims to reduce deforestation and forest degradation worldwide. It obliges companies operating in the EU to ensure that their supply chains are free from deforestation. The regulation covers various sectors such as agriculture, wood products, palm oil, soy and beef.

Companies must demonstrate that their products do not contain illegal timber products and that no land has been cleared to grow them.

The regulation encourages cooperation between the EU and countries of origin to promote sustainable practices and combat deforestation. It also includes measures to promote sustainable farming practices and preserve biodiversity. EU deforestation regulation also includes support for local communities and indigenous peoples to protect their rights and traditional knowledge.

Companies must provide transparent reporting on their supply chain practices and efforts to reduce deforestation. The regulation also provides penalties for companies that violate the rules.

The EU deforestation regulation is part of the EU's efforts to combat climate change and achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
